How classification works, and keeping it valid
Classification uses two figures together — investment in plant, machinery or equipment and annual turnover: micro is up to ₹1 crore investment and ₹5 crore turnover, small up to ₹10 crore and ₹50 crore, and medium up to ₹50 crore and ₹250 crore. Export turnover is excluded when working out the turnover figure. Registration is a self-declaration on the Udyam portal using Aadhaar and PAN, and it is now linked to income-tax and GST data, which the system uses to verify and update your figures. Because it’s data-linked, the classification refreshes each year from your filed returns, and a business that grows past a limit moves up a category with a transition period before benefits change. There is no government fee, and no need to renew manually. Keeping the registration details — activity, bank, contact — current matters because the benefits, from the 45-day payment protection to priority-sector lending and scheme eligibility, all flow from a valid, up-to-date Udyam record. Re-confirming your figures after each year’s returns keeps the category correct.
