Frequently asked questions

Who has to pay advance tax?

Anyone whose total tax liability for the year, after reducing TDS and TCS, is Rs 10,000 or more. Resident senior citizens (60+) with no income from business or profession are exempt and pay self-assessment tax instead.

What are the advance tax due dates?

For regular taxpayers: 15% by 15 June, 45% by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March (cumulative). Taxpayers under presumptive taxation (44AD/44ADA) pay the entire amount in one instalment by 15 March.

What is the interest for missing advance tax?

Section 425 (old 234C) charges 1% per month on the shortfall in each instalment, and Section 424 (old 234B) charges 1% per month if less than 90% of the tax is paid by the year-end. Both are simple interest.

How do I pay advance tax?

Online through the income-tax portal using Challan No. 280 (now the e-Pay Tax service), selecting ‘Advance Tax’ and the relevant assessment year. Keep the challan for your records and your return.

Can I just pay everything in March?

You can, but you will pay Section 425 interest for the earlier instalments you skipped. Spreading payments across the four dates avoids that interest – which is exactly what this planner schedules for you.
