Renew via 10AB
File Form 10AB ahead of expiry to keep 80G running.
Lapse = no donor deduction
Donations after a lapsed 80G don’t qualify for the donor’s deduction.
Keeping 80G and the donor benefit alive
Because 80G is now time-bound like 12AB, the renewal in Form 10AB has to be filed before the existing approval expires, and the consequences of slipping fall on the donors as much as the trust. If the approval lapses, gifts made after the expiry date don’t qualify for the donor’s deduction, which can quietly undermine fundraising and embarrass the trust with supporters who expected a receipt. The renewal asks the department to re-confirm that the trust is genuinely charitable and compliant, so it draws on the same records as the 12AB renewal — the deed, audited accounts and activity reports — and the two renewals are better handled together since they share the form and the evidence. The trust should also stay current on the annual 10BD donation statement and 10BE certificates throughout, since a clean reporting record supports the renewal. The safeguard is the same as for 12AB: note the expiry the day approval is granted, apply well ahead of the deadline, and keep the books and activity records ready. A lapsed 80G is recoverable by re-applying, but the gap can cost donors their deduction in the meantime. Confirm the current renewal window and form.
