What documents are needed for GST registration?

Short answerYou need PAN, proof of business address (rent agreement / utility bill / NOC), bank account proof, photographs and ID of the proprietor, partners or directors, and the constitution document (partnership deed or certificate of incorporation).

Checklist

  • PAN (business and promoters)
  • Address proof: rent agreement + latest utility bill, or NOC if owned
  • Bank proof: cancelled cheque or statement
  • Photos and ID of promoters; constitution document

The usual sticking point

Address proof — the rent agreement, utility bill and NOC must be consistent and current, or the application gets queried.

Getting the address proof right

The document set varies a little by constitution. A proprietor needs the proprietor’s PAN and Aadhaar, a photo, business address proof and bank proof. A partnership adds the partnership deed and partners’ details; a company adds the certificate of incorporation, board resolution or authorisation, and the directors’ details, with the authorised signatory’s PAN and Aadhaar. For all of them, address proof is where most applications stumble. If the premises are rented, you need the rent or leave-and-licence agreement plus a recent electricity or property-tax bill in the owner’s name; if owned, the latest utility bill or tax receipt; if shared or used without charge, a no-objection certificate from the owner with their ID and a utility bill. The bill should be recent and the names across the agreement, bill and NOC should be consistent. Bank proof — a cancelled cheque showing the name and IFSC, or a statement — can be added soon after registration if not ready at the start. Keeping clear, current copies of these before you apply is what gets the GSTIN issued in one pass rather than after a REG-03 query.
