How long is an e-way bill valid?

Short answerAn e-way bill is valid for one day for every 200 km (for normal cargo), counted from when Part B is generated — so a 500 km trip gets three days. If the goods can’t reach in time, you can extend the validity within the allowed window before or shortly after it expires.

The distance-based rule

Validity is based on distance: one day per 200 km (or part thereof) for ordinary cargo, starting when Part B (the vehicle details) is entered. Over-dimensional cargo gets one day per smaller distance. So the further the consignment travels, the longer the bill stays valid. The per-day distance was revised over time — confirm the current figure.

Extending it

If a breakdown, detour or delay means the goods won’t arrive before the bill expires, the transporter can extend the validity — generally within a short window before or after expiry — by updating the current position and reason. An expired bill that isn’t extended makes the movement non-compliant.

A worked example

Example: goods travelling 500 km get a bill valid for three days. If a truck breaks down on day three with 80 km to go, the transporter extends the bill rather than risk moving on an expired one. Planning the route against the validity, and watching for delays, keeps dispatches clean. Our team can advise your logistics team on the rules.
