Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a Gumasta licence if I work from home as a freelancer?

Strictly under the Maharashtra Act, any commercial activity needs registration. Practically, freelancers working solo from home often skip Gumasta – but it is required to open a current account in the trade name.

Two reasons to register below threshold: (a) you are a B2B seller and your clients want a GST invoice to claim input credit, (b) you are on e-commerce platforms which mandate GST registration.

PTEC is for the proprietor – Rs 2,500/year, payable by 30 June. PTRC is for employees you pay. A solo freelancer needs only PTEC.

No. The proprietorship uses the proprietor’s PAN. For tax, you and the business are the same person.

Yes. Hiring triggers EPF (if 20+ employees), ESIC (if 10+ employees in covered area), PTRC (Maharashtra), and TDS deduction obligations.

Yes, if your business is a ‘specified profession’ under Section 44AA(1) – legal, medical, engineering, architecture, accountancy, IT consultancy. And if your gross receipts are <= Rs 75 lakh with cash receipts <= 5%.
